New iPad leaked photos

The fourth-generation Apple iPad was released in November of last year. By the rubric of Apple product launches, that likely indicates that Apple will release the fifth-generation iPad sometime in 2013. (It's worth noting that Apple has ditched the numeric designations for its tablets. There is no iPad 3, or iPad 4 – there is only the iPad). So what will the next device look like? Well, if a new photo released by the French tech site Nowhereelse.fr is to be believed, the 2013 iPad will be thinner than its predecessors, but have the same general design. According to Nowhereelse.fr, which calls the image the "first evidence of the imminent release of the next iPad," the source for the leak is an anonymous source within the Chinese supply chain. So yes, worth taking this one with a grain of salt.

Various reports have claimed that Apple has not yet even started production on the iPad 5 yet, and so no precise date has been set for its unveiling or release. However, rumors speculate that the California-based company will commence manufacturing of the new iPad some time later this summer.

A source at a Taiwan-based supply chain recently claimed that Apple plans to begin volume production on the tablet starting this summer.

That would of course counter other recent rumors that pointed to the new iPad launching as early as this month.

Apple does normally launch a new iPad model during the first few months of the year. However, last year those plans were altered when the company decided to launch two iPads in the same year.

First published by the French blog Nowhereelse, the photos show the iPad glass along with a finer bezel -- the rim holding the glass in place -- indicating the screen will remain the same size while the overall device gets smaller and lighter.

The front glass images come on the heels of pictures of back housing leaked in January, with a thinner casing, similar to the design of the iPad mini.

As always, the leaked images are unconfirmed until Apple unveils the real thing. The formal presentation is expected sometime this spring.
